Bags of crunchy snacks are expensive. Here's a garlicky way to make your own and save money. You need small, plain, bite-size crackers. Look for the supermarket's own brand. You can change the herbs to suit your taste and add additional ingredients such as mini cereals (e.g. Shreddies or Shredded Wheat), a contrasting brand of cracker or various kinds of nuts. 6-8 peeled cloves of garlic 175ml (6 fl oz) cup rapeseed, sunflower or peanut oil 1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley 2 tsp dried marjoram or oregano 1 tsp dried thyme 1 tsp salt 1 large box small crackers 1 packet small pretzels 115gm (4oz) salted or unsalted peanuts Place the garlic in a blender and process on low. Gradually add the oil until the garlic and oil are completely puréed. Increase the speed to medium and add the chopped herbs and salt until well blended. Put the crackers, pretzels and nuts into a large mixing bowl and drizzle with the garlic mixture. Using your hands, toss and turn the mixture until coated. Separate the completed cracker mixture into 2 large zip-top plastic bags and seal. Keep at room temperature for 2 days, shaking and turning the bag once a day. Transfer to airtight containers and store. If keeping longer, refrigerate. Return to room temperature for serving. |
