With family history more popular than ever, there’s no time like the present to start your journey into the past. Findmypast.co.uk is the essential family history website for England & Wales providing easy, online access to all the records you need to get your family tree back hundreds of years. We all get into family history for different reasons; maybe you inherited your research from a relative, perhaps a recent birth or death in the family has piqued an interest, you may have been inspired by watching celebrities researching their family history on TV. Whatever your individual trigger, our primary motivation tends to be the same; we want to discover our ancestors’ stories. What excited them? What annoyed them? What was life like for them? Can we glimpse aspects of ourselves in their interests, beliefs and personality traits? If you’re new to this fascinating, absorbing pastime, you can find out how to get started by watching our series of short tutorials, which are free to view: http://www.findmypast.co.uk/video-tutorials-begin-tree.jsp At findmypast.co.uk you can search for your relatives in the complete birth, marriage and death indexes for England and Wales and the complete census collection, including the recently released 1911 census. These records will get your family tree back to 1837. To trace it back even further, you’ll need to look at parish records – listings of baptisms, marriages and burials recorded by parish churches. Findmypast.co.uk has a large collection of parish records, dating as far back as 1538 – when Henry VIII was on the throne! There are also military records going back to 1656, covering both the First and Second World Wars, and our passenger lists contain details of anyone emigrating or travelling to Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, America and Canada between 1890 and 1960. If you have Scottish roots, take a look at our sister website www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk . For more information visit www.findmypast.co.uk |
